My project examines the ecological sustainability of cities, using Melbourne as an example, by analyzing the footprint of urbanization, changing patterns of the ecosystems during the urbanization process by conducting spatial analysis. The aim of the research is to achieve a sustainable urban metabolism that would minimize the impact of urbanization through protecting and enhancing natural assets, such as green systems and biodiversity. GIS is used to analyze these elements of cities by integrating social, economic, ecological and land use data-sets.
