Earlier in the year, I jointly co-created and implemented with Heike and her wider staff team a change agenda to meet the challenges of the current economic climate so as to ensure a stable platform for the organisation to grow and develop.

I entered into articles on leaving school and gained my qualifications to Intermediate Level through a mix of self-tutoring, on-the-job learning, and a distance-learning course. Through staff promotion and the acquisition of skills, knowledge and experience I became Senior Audit Clerk in early 1973 and my duties were mainly oversight of a small audit team of two people; the preparation and presentation of client accounts (Sole Trader to Limited Companies, including consolidated accounts); and, as the principal partner's sole proxy, oversight of major bankruptcies, liquidations and receiverships.

This was my first full-time youth work post upon graduating and involved a 50%/50% youth work to teaching role. The main duties included managing a small freestanding youth centre on the school site and a half-time commitment to the school's PE and Social Studies timetable. In the latter two years of my time in this post my teaching commitment changed to working solely in a specially created 'pupil withdrawal' unit, which was set up specifically for young people with behavioural and emotional difficulties. During my time in Kent I was also a founder member of the Staff Development Policy Steering Group and had responsibility for writing sections of the Policy on Induction and Performance Appraisal. I was also a founder member of the peer non-managerial supervision cooperative that operated across the county.

This was an 80%/20% youth work to teaching post, involving managing the youth centre and a limited teaching commitment of PE and Social Studies. Main duties included local budgetary control, managing a part-time staff team; programme planning and delivery, staff support and supervision; and networking with local voluntary and statutory agencies.
Whilst in this post I was provided with an additional salary enhancement to fulfil the role of Training Tutor for both the Council's Foundation Youth Work Course for part-time staff and a range of other in-service and externally provided learning experiences. In this latter capacity I often worked, in a consultancy role, with organisations such as the Police, Probation Service, Social Services, Careers Service, and Juvenile Justice workers.

The Confederation of Heads of Young People's Services (formerly known as APYCO) is the national association for leaders and senior managers in Integrated Youth Support Services. For the period I was involved I was an Executive Committee member of the Association of Principal Youth and Community Officers (APYCO), and during my time I represented the Association as lead for the UK Youth Work Alliance and lead for the Transforming Youth Work Management Development Programme. This was a Government funded development programme and, in my role as FPM's lead associate, I managed and provided facilitation for the Phase 2 delivery of the programme.

FPM believes in the importance of outstanding public services. Its Chief Executive, Kevin Ford, is one of the UK's leading writers and thinkers on workforce and service development in the public and not-for-profit sectors. He believes in transforming services for the public through specialist training and delivery and through contextualised service design. I have been a lead associate for FPM since 2003, with a particular emphasis on services with and for young people. Like Kevin, I share a passion for helping public and not-for-profit services build a skilled, informed and motivated workforce in this rapidly changing environment that has real and lasting impact.
