Starkey Tours
Recreational Facilities and Services
A specialized tour company focused on providing travel access to the deaf and hearing impaired in the US. Custom-created trips, including cruises to the Caribbean and Mediterranean; escorted trips across Europe, specialized travel to Scandinavia, Italy, Spain and France. Nothing domestic at this time. We were the first (only?) to provide interpreters at the airport for check in, private waiting areas, captioning of in-flight movies and more.

A forward-thinking S&L in San Diego, Great American was interested in expanding, but was nearly invisible beyond southern California. I helped to create entry-visibility in the Arizona and New Mexico market with television, direct mail and POP featuring celebrity spokespersons. Very successful - so much so that Wells Fargo bought them within 18 months.

Imported from San Diego, I managed all of the financial services accounts for the region (credit unions, insurance and banking) and was responsible for prospecting. With the sudden loss of a very large account, Grey decided to withdraw from the Minneapolis area, and closed the office. I was invited to New York, but declined.

The Sniglet Group
Marketing and Advertising
The Sniglet Group was a small marketing company with big marketing ideas. We developed highly visible and successful product marketing programs for Cellular One (now AT&T wireless), Sandoz Nutrition (now Novartis - 8th largest corporation in the world), and Heinz Pet Products, among a few others. We enjoyed tremendous growth in a short time through a masterful client-buildilng effort in that our semi-fleshed-out ideas were presented to these and other clients, with an eye toward rounding-out the strategies and creative effort with the (new) client's direct participation. When we sold the business to then-$200M Gage Marketing, it was with some reluctance to leave the entrepreneurial successes we enjoyed to return to what we termed 'boardroom' marketing.

I sold a previous business to the Gage organization, and became director of new business: brought in Cellular One (now ATT Wireless), Heinz Pet Products, Alcoa Aluminum, Musicland and others. Within this corporate environment, I also managed another organization named LakeFront Entertainment owned by Skip Gage, Bill Pohlad and Eric Paulson that offered new music distribution as well as helping to re-establish 'classic' talent looking for a newer, wider audience. Bill Withers, Little Anthony, O.C.Smith, Steppenwolf and others.

Music
A wholly owned corporation, jointly owned by Skip Gage (Gage Marketing), Bill Pohlad (River Road Entertainment) and Eric Paulson (Navarre Corp.). The mission of this corporation was twofold: to find new talent and 'develop' salable music; discover older, unsigned talent with a current 'book' of music and create late-term growth.

The Cullinan Group
Marketing and Advertising
This was not only a cool place to work because of the architectural savvy in the building on Harmon Place in downtown Minneapolis - it was a cool place work because the people involved in this full-service agency were creatively 'hot.' Founder Wayne Cullinan led this group of highly-creative professionals down a busy road, creating award winning and successful creative marketing approaches, and winning new pitches along the way. If there was ever a 'hot shop', this was it. It was great fun, a great experience, and everyone in the house enjoyed it.
