Haves
We have developed a number of models, frameworks and patterns for teaching and implementing enterprise architecture principles using any technology platform or a hybrid environment. We are mapping Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), Microsoft, Oracle and SAP and other systems and technology platforms to the enterprise systems architecture model that we have developed as a common platform independent model.

Academic CIO Forum
The Academic CIO Forum was started by individuals who were passionate about bridging the gap between academia and commercial industry. As academics and professionals, they felt the need to bring influential stakeholders such as those serving as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of corporate enterprise and academics teaching in universities to discuss a variety of important topics. They began dealing with the lack of skills in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector and reviewing the disparate views on internship and graduate programs held by corporate employers and academiaCIO's face increasingly challenging global conditions and complexity.

Cape Regional Chamber of Commerce
I joined the Chamber of Commerce as a receptionist. We hosted international trade delegations, seminars, meetings with members and representations to Government, certified trade documents, offered telex and fax services to members. We produced a weekly business newsbulletin and organised the locally acclaimed Design for Living show. Design for Living is Cape Town’s longest-running Expo (25 years). We worked closely with SACOB. After completing a DTP course I was promoted to Desktop Publisher and became responsible for the layout of the weekly newsbulletin including the advertising. I left the Chamber after six years to become an entrepreneur. I went back a few times in a temporary capacity assisting with reception, membership, and as a PA to the Deputy Director. I still remain in contact with the Chamber.

Differentiating Factor
The Journey from Conversation to Action
The CIO Forum was established at the end of 2007 as an academic CIO Forum to bridge the gap between academia and industry. It was aimed at developing a community to grow the research collaborations that would support the Master Information Officer (MIO) program which would be launched in 2009. In 2008, we started a series of cafe conversations through our Monthly CIO Breakfast Forums in Cape Town. The first six months dealt with skills development and internships.
After a call to action, the CIO Forum became engaged in local programs and initiatives in the Western Cape in 2010 and a skills development pilot in 2011 aimed at developing a model to create a pathway for creating software programmers, technical skills, software professionals and jobs for unemployed youths and graduates, particularly from disadvantaged and poor communities.

The CIO Forum will be hosting the Monthly CIO Breakfast Forums at the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the 15th of June 2012. We will be discussing the role of ICT in rural and poor communities. We would like to invite local businesses to gain a better understanding of the opportunities and activities in poor and rural communities and how they are impacted by a knowledge economy that places greater focus on human intellectual capital.
